Overnight stay in a hotel in Reykjavik

After breakfast, you will be transferred by bus to Akureyri, the largest city in North Iceland, known for its maritime history and picturesque surroundings. This is the starting point for your cruise, and your expedition begins this afternoon. After boarding the MS HONDIUS, your journey will commence through Eyjafjörður, one of Iceland’s longest fjords. With a bit of luck, you might spot your first whales here before the ship heads out to the open sea.

Your cruise will take you to unique regions of magical beauty and captivating tranquility. Landing locations are weather-dependent; under normal conditions, the following landing sites are planned:

Grimsey – An island full of life

Your first planned landing is on Grimsey, a small island located directly on the Arctic Circle. Besides the symbolic crossing into the Arctic, you can expect to see a vibrant birdlife, including puffins, kittiwakes, and razorbills. In the evening, you’ll continue north, passing the uninhabited island of Kolbeinsey.

Whale watching on the high seas

The boat trip to Jan Mayen is all about the search for these impressive marine giants. Humpback whales, fin whales, minke whales, blue whales, and even orcas can be found in these waters. The boat route is flexibly adjusted to allow for the best possible viewing of these fascinating animals.

Jan Mayen – Volcanic landscape and history

The remote Norwegian island of Jan Mayen is characterized by rugged, volcanic beauty. The island is dominated by the majestic Beerenberg, a 2,300-meter-high, snow-capped volcano. Subject to Norwegian approval, passengers can visit the weather station or explore the ruins of a former 17th-century Dutch whaling station.

Along the ice edge in the midnight sun

Further north lies the fascinating world of sea ice. Here you can look out for bowhead whales, harp seals, and polar bears. The ship follows the ice edge to approximately the 79th parallel before finally heading west to Svalbard. This passage promises unforgettable nature experiences under the radiant midnight sun.

Spitsbergen – The Gateway to the Arctic

Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago, offers a breathtaking backdrop of fjords, glaciers, and steep mountains. Forlandsundet, a strait between the main island of Spitsbergen and Prins Karls Forland, is known for its walrus populations. Alternatively, you can visit St. Johns Fjord or Alkhornet, where rugged cliffs serve as a breeding ground for numerous seabirds. Reindeer and Arctic foxes can also be observed here.

Today your nature cruise ends in Longyearbyen. After enjoying a final breakfast on board, the crew will bid you farewell in the Longyearbyen harbor. An organized transfer will take you to Longyearbyen Airport for your flight to Oslo, where you will stay overnight.

Overnight stay in Oslo

Connecting flight from Oslo to your home airport in Germany, Switzerland or Austria.
